The weakness of fascism in the United States warns again against the assumption that crisis breeds extremism automatically. Conditions appeared favourable—for the severity of the economic crisis, conservative dislike of the New Deal, and isolationist opposition to American involvement in the struggle against fascism in Europe—all provided grievances for extremists. The New Deal neutralized discontent, and anti-state individualism took extremists in different directions.
